Toyota Announces Pricing, Updates for 2012 Prius

2012_toyota_prius_photo_4
Toyota has announced updates to its best-selling Prius line for next year, including a moderate uptick in price. The 2012 Prius will have subtly restyled tail lamps, wheel covers and front fascia, as well as standard LED daytime running lights with an on/off switch. On the inside, the car will now include a standard 6.1-inch screen accessing an updated Multi-Information Display system. The five available Prius models will sell for between 2 percent and 4.3 percent higher than 2011's editions, not including a $760 destination charge.

The Prius One―which is now only available to fleets―will increase $895, to $23,015; the Prius Two will increase $480, to $24,000; the Prius Three will increase $1,045, to $25,565; the Prius Four will increase $915, to $28,235; while the most recent generation of Prius, the Prius Five will experience an MSRP increase of $1,015, to $29,805.

The Prius Three, whose price will increase the most for next year, will be getting a host of new standard features to justify the extra expense, including Toyota's Entune audio system, navigation, backup camera display, and Smart Key. The Prius Four will be getting an improved audio system and refined seating, including a power adjustable driver's seat.

Perhaps the most interesting change Toyota has in store for 2012 will be the newly-optional Head-Up Display, which projects information like speed, navigation details and hybrid efficiency onto the windshield for easy visual access. The system―the concept for which originates with jet fighters―has the potential to improve safety by keeping the driver's eyes on the road instead of the increasingly complex dashboard and console displays in modern vehicles. It will be interesting to see whether the feature catches on, and whether it evolves to potentially replace other center console functions in future vehicles.

Toyota Announces Prices for 2012 RAV4 Compact SUV and Prius Liftback

2012_toyota_prius_hatchback_photo
Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc.,announced manufacturer’s suggested retail prices (MSRP) for the 2012 RAV4 compact sport utility vehicle (SUV) and the Prius Liftback. The RAV4 will begin arriving at dealerships on December 20 and the Prius in January 2012.

RAV4
The Toyota RAV4 is offered in three distinct grades – RAV4 grade, Sport and top-of-the-line Limited – and with a choice between the 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine or a 269 horsepower 3.5-liter V6. Each engine can be teamed with either front-wheel drive or electronic on-demand four-wheel-drive. The roomy RAV4 offers optional third-row seating on RAV4 and Limited grade models.
The 2012 RAV4 receives an overall price increase of $100, or 0.4 percent, with some models receiving a price decrease, helping the RAV4 retain its excellent value. The base MSRP will range from $22,650 for the RAV4 four-cylinder 2WD model with a four-speed automatic transmission to $28,650 for the Limited V6 4WD model with a five-speed automatic transmission.
All 2012 RAV4 models will feature a new standard audio system that’s equipped with hands-free phone capability, phone book access and music streaming via Bluetooth® wireless technology, while the Limited Grade will offer an available Display Audio with Navigation and Entune™. The optional system includes a 6.1-inch touch-screen, AM/FM CD player with MP3/WMA playback capability, six speakers, SiriusXM Satellite Radio (includes three-month trial subscription to XM Select Package), HD Radio™ with iTunes ® Tagging, auxiliary audio jack, USB port with iPod® connectivity and control, hands-free phone capability, phone book access, advanced voice recognition, and music streaming via Bluetooth wireless technology.
The available Entune™ multimedia system, which is a collection of popular mobile applications and data services via a compatible smartphone, includes Bing™ and Pandora®; real-time information including traffic, weather, fuel prices, sports and stocks. Apps available in spring 2012 at no charge include iHeartRadio, MovieTickets.com and OpenTable ®. Access to Entune services is complimentary for three years.

Prius
With over one million units sold in the U.S. alone, the midsize Prius Liftback has helped Toyota’s Prius brand become the most popular hybrid vehicle nameplate by offering consumers the most proven hybrid technology available. In 2012, the Prius Liftback will be joined in the showroom by other members of the Prius Family; the versatile Prius v, the Prius Plug-in Hybrid, and the subcompact Prius c.
The Prius Liftback receives updates and enhancements to its available content for the 2012 model year. The 2012 Prius Liftback MSRP ranges from $24,000 for the Prius Two model to $29,805 for Prius Five, reflecting a price increase ranging from 2.0 percent to 4.3 percent.
The 2012 model year Prius receives a refreshed front fascia, revised tail lamps, newly styled 15-inch wheel covers and LED Daytime Running Lights (DRL) with on/off feature. The 2012 Prius interior is updated to include a standard 6.1-inch Display Audio system with USB for iPod® connectivity and control, Bluetooth® with phone book access for hands-free calling and music streaming, and a more advanced Multi-Information Display. Prius will continue to offer class leading carryover equipment from the 2011 model year such as the Touch Tracer Display, driver door Smart Key with Push Button Start and remote illuminated entry, tilt/telescopic steering wheel with audio/climate/phone controls, and the Star Safety SystemTM.
For the 2012 model year, the Prius Three is enhanced with more standard technology that includes a Display Audio system with EntuneTM and Navigation, an integrated backup camera and three-door Smart Key. The 2012 Prius Four adds a more potent audio system that includes eight JBL® GreenEdge™ speakers and amplifier, SofTex-trimmed seats, headlamps with auto on/off feature and an eight-way power adjustable driver’s seat with lumbar power support.

The Prius Four and Five models will also offer, as part of an option package, Toyota’s Premium HDD Navigation with Entune and JBL, which features an exclusive seven-inch touch-screen with split-screen capability. Another option package feature on Prius Four and Five models, and a first for the Toyota lineup, is a Head-Up Display (HUD) that helps drivers keep their attention on the road by projecting vehicle speed, navigation information and hybrid system data onto the windshield.
The 2012 Prius Liftback will be offered through a simplified ordering strategy based on a four-grade structure with optional packages to create a total of seven available configurations.
The MSRP’s for the 2012 RAV4 and Prius Liftback do not include the delivery, processing and handling (DPH) fee. The DPH for the RAV4 is $810 while the DPH for the Prius Liftback is $760. The DPH fee for vehicles distributed by Southeast Toyota (SET) and Gulf States Toyota (GST) may vary.

2012 Toyota Camry earns 5-Star NHTSA crash rating

2012_toyota_camry_photo
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration released its first batch of 2012 model-year ratings this month. Under the stricter guidelines, only three 2012 models — the Chevrolet Camaro, Cadillac CTS and Toyota Camry — earned five-star composite scores from the safety agency.

In fact, as we previously reported, the Camaro is the only vehicle to earn a perfect rating across the board since the new guidelines took effect for the 2011 model year.

NHTSA's composite scores are composed of five-star ratings for frontal, rollover and a combined side-pole and barrier tests. The side-pole test, which is new, simulates a 20-mph side-impact crash into a 10-inch-diameter pole or tree at a 75-degree angle just behind the A-pillar on the driver's side.

The redesigned 2012 Camry earned a five-star overall rating, getting four stars in the frontal test, five stars in the side-crash test and four stars in the rollover test.
Besides the Camaro, Camry and CTS, all the other models — including new entries such as the 2012 Chrysler 200, Ford Explorer, Ford Focus and Fiat 500 — received no better than four-star overall scores.

Of the 22 trucks, SUVs, crossovers and passenger cars tested, most received four stars in frontal or rollover tests. Surprisingly, most vehicles — including the 2012 Fiat 500, Kia Sorento and Honda Pilot — conquered the more rigorous side-crash test with a five-star rating.

The 2012 Mazda3 and Chrysler 200 had the worst side-impact rating of the bunch, earning three stars. Some models, such as the 2012 Chevrolet Suburban and Cadillac Escalade ESV, had three-star rollover ratings.

NHTSA said it will test 74 vehicles for the 2012 model year (list here), including 42 passenger cars, 22 SUVs/crossovers, eight pickups and two minivans, representing 81% of the 2012 models by sales volume. Only three models have earned five-star ratings for the model year, but there are more than 50 models to go.

Alesia, thank you for sharing your experience

"I just want to say what a wonderful experience I had buying a vehicle from L & S toyota. The salesman we had was Shawn Schuyler. He was great. I spent alot of time at other dealerships and most of the salesmen didn't know what cars they had on the lot or anything about them. Shawn knew alot about the vehicle we were interested in and he could answer any of our questions. When he showed us a vehicle and we weren't really interested he didn't try to make us buy it, he just found us what we were looking for. Also Angela Morgan was great . She helped us with all our paperwork and we felt confident that she knew what she was doing. Of course I wish I could have gotten a better price on the vehicle I bought but Shawn was really great. So far I'm loving my Rav4. It drives great and it just feels right."

Toyota Prius Family of Vehicles Receive GreenCarReports' '2012 Best Green Car to Buy' Award

2012_toyota_prius_photo_3
GreenCarReports.com has named the 2012 Toyota Prius family of vehicles as its “Best Green Car to Buy 2012.” Beginning with the 2012 model year, the Prius will expand to a family of four vehicles, including the third-generation Prius Liftback, the Prius v, the Prius Plug-in Hybrid, and the Prius c.

GreenCarReports editors choose the most significant new “green” car available to shoppers during the 2012 model year, taking into account new technologies, their practicality, and their impact on the environment. The GreenCarReports’ “Best Green Car to Buy” award recognizes mass-market, environmentally sensitive vehicles that are available below $60,000. Utilizing the TheCarConnection’s ratings as a starting point for their evaluation, the GreenCarReports editorial team applies their criteria to select the winner that will carry the “Best Green Car to Buy 2012” environmental message.

“The Prius is more than just one car this year,” said Green Car Reports Editor John Voelcker. “With a new Prius v and the Prius Plug-In Hybrid, it’s now a family of vehicles with some of the highest gas mileage on the market today, and the Prius name is likely to help encourage buyers to take the plunge into plug-in vehicles."

The Prius vehicles that won the GreenCarReports’ “Best Green Car to Buy 2012” award were chosen from a competitive field of environmentally sensitive cars that also included the Fiat 500, Honda Civic Hybrid, Infiniti M35h, Mitsubishi i, and Volkswagen Passat TDi.

The Prius Liftback is in its third generation and earned an EPA-estimated 50 mpg combined (51 city mpg/ 48 highway mpg) rating. The Prius v, which went on sale in October, will be an unmatched combination of versatility and fuel efficiency in a midsize. With 58-percent more cargo space than the Liftback, the Prius v has more cargo space than 80-percent of the small SUVs on the road today, while still accomplishing an EPA-estimated 44-mpg city.

The Prius Plug-in Hybrid, which offers seating for five, is expected to achieve a manufacturer-estimated 87 MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent) in combined driving and 49 MPG in hybrid mode. With expected class-leading fuel economy better than 50 mpg in the city, which is the highest city mpg of any non-plug-in vehicle, the Prius c will be an entry into the Prius Family appealing to youthful shoppers seeking fuel efficiency, technology, and spirited driving dynamics in the subcompact segment. Both the Prius c and Prius Plug-in will go on sale in the spring of 2012.

The Prius vehicles rely on Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive, which benefits from 14 years of global market development, and pairs a highly efficient gasoline internal combustion engine with two high-output motor/generators, a large rechargeable battery, and an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission to help the vehicles attain class-leading fuel economy in their respective segments. The development of the systems that govern the operation, integration and regenerative capabilities of the Hybrid Synergy Drive system represent considerable engineering effort, and help enhance the efficiency and performance of succeeding generations of Hybrid Synergy Drive equipped vehicles.

The 2011 Toyota FJ Cruiser is retro with a modern edge

2011_toyota_fj_cruiser_2
I wanted to compare the 2011 Toyota FJ Cruiser to the Jeep Wrangler, because when I saw it I kind of felt the same sort of vibe. It can’t be done though, sort of like putting apples and oranges together and trying to find the comparisons.

The other comparisons that one might consider are the Jeep Grand Cherokee or the Nissan Pathfinder, but I am still reticent to consider them the same either.

The thing that really stands out about the Toyota FJ Cruiser is that it’s all about “retro.” The category is a midsize SUV, but the Cruiser will also take you down memory lane making you recall the earlier days of the Toyota Land Cruisers.  That was back in the 1960s to early 1980s and it was the FJ40 – do you remember that down and dirty, dependable four-wheel drive?

Today the Toyota FJ Cruiser is another off-roader that has the ability to mean what it says.  Take for instance the truck-based ladder-frame chassis and its tougher than thou suspension with a hardware reminiscent of the 4Runner SUV with the same Toyota moniker.

In comparison to the 4Runner, however, the FJ Cruiser is a bit smaller and not quite as expensive.

The FJ Cruiser is a four-door vehicle with a bit of a twist. The front doors open as usual, but the two back doors are reverse-opening and that took a moment to get used to, but my back seat passengers gave the design big kudos for easier entry.

The standard features on the FJ Cruiser are the normal AC, a stereo with CD, power windows and locks, iPod connectivity and XM satellite radio and a USB port, Bluetooth audio streaming, and a Bluetooth hands-free system with steering-wheel controls. In addition, there's the JBL premium audio option.

There are also additional packages that come with more to choose from overall. The Trail Teams Special Edition comes in Army Green paint and has water-resistant seats and floors for off roading. It can take the road in up to 27-inches of water and still keep up.

The FJ Cruiser’s off road savvy also now comes with an A-TRAC active-traction system, a multi-information display with inclinometer, compass, temperature, BF Goodrich Rugged Trail tires, Bilstein shock absorbers, a Cyclone air precleaner, and 115V/400V power outlets. Under the hood is a 4.0-liter V6 engine with 259 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque.

There are two four-wheel-drive (4WD) options to choose from with two transmissions. There is a four-wheel-drive model that offers a five-speed automatic transmission and that can be changed easily from a 2-Hi, 4-Hi or 4-Lo and there is the Cruiser with the six-speed manual transmission. This latter one is more of the “take it off the road” choice in my opinion. Not sure why you’d opt for this next one, but there is a two-wheel-drive FJ Cruiser, if you must, but you can only get it with a five-speed automatic.

For safety, they all have the usual stability control and antilock disc brakes and airbags.

Looking at the exterior: the grille is a standout with round headlights, black bumpers, a grille-mounted Toyota emblem versus the most recent one seen on other Toyota’s and there are also the wrap-around rear windows and an exposed spare tire (we like the fact that it is actually full size).  Inside, the dashboard means serious business, right to the point, and again can we say a bit retro.

The FJ Cruiser is fun to drive, but the real fun will come in taking it through its paces off-road.  It was designed to play with the big boys and is as tough as any one of ‘em, thanks to the tough box frame and an excellent suspension, including a rear axle that’s a solid sale on this one.

Still not sold? Well, who can pass up the retro look after all?

Toyota Prius V Named Finalist for 2012 Green Car of the Year

2012_toyota_prius_v_at_marin_2

The Green Car of the Year award is presented by Green Car Journal, which calls itself "the premier source of information on high fuel efficiency, low emission, advanced technology, and alternative fuel vehicles." This will be the seventh year a Green Car is designated.

In a consolation move, the  2012 Toyota Prius V, 2012 Ford Focus Electric, 2012 Mitsubishi i, the 2012 Honda Civic CNG and the 2012 Volkswagen Passat TDI  are honored as Green Car Journal's Top 5 Green Cars for 2012.

Selecting Green Car Finalists
Like other awards, Green Car shoots for vehicles that are perceived as being top in the public's consciousness. After all, what's the point of doing an award for last year's model when you can grab headlines now? The Green Car of the Year award recognizes vehicles that become available by January 1 of the award year. That explains why most mere mortals will not have seen, less likely drive, the eventual winner before it receives its award.

Green Car Journal editors say "literally dozens of models are considered that feature improved environmental impact and increased efficiencies." That brings the mind the old quotation, "Many are considered but few are chosen."

According to the Green Car press release, "Vehicles running on all fuels and technologies weigh in, including high-efficiency gasoline and diesel models along with ones that run on gaseous fuels, electricity and other alternative fuels. Along with quantifiable environmental achievement, market significance and 'newness' are but a few of many criteria considered as the field is narrowed to a final five."

The problem for the Green Car jurors is there is no clear front runner for the award but the edge would have to go to the 2012 Honda Civic CNG, or compressed natural gas, that is being rolled out in November. It is the only vehicle of the five finalists that uses a new form of fuel. Three of the finalists are electric vehicles and the 2012 VW Passat uses diesel, which has been around since the dawn of automotive time. What sets the 2012 model apart is its significantly lower emissions and high mpg rating.

The 2011 Green Car of the Year was the 2011 Chevrolet  Volt, which debuted to strong fanfare but unfortunately an unappealing high price. It has faced tough market competition from the 2011 Nissan Leaf, which garnered more awards internationally than the Volt.

Green Car Jurors
Green Car of the Year jurors include leaders of the nation's top environmental organizations, including Carl Pope, chairman of the Sierra  Club; Frances Beinecke, president of the Natural Resources Defense Council; Jean-Michel Cousteau, president of Ocean Futures Society and Matt Petersen, president of Global Green USA. Also, Jay Leno, noted auto enthusiast and host of the "Tonight Show," as well as automotive icon Carroll Shelby join Green Car Journal editors in rounding out the 2012 jury.

What's unusual about the Green Car of the Year jurors is it's not a collection of  automotive journalists. The top jurors have some real green credibility in the form of careers in protecting the environment. The addition of Jay Leno might seem like a stunt at first blush but he has extensive automotive knowledge and access to top automotive executives. What Carroll Shelby is doing on a green car panel we're not quite sure.

2012 Toyota Avalon Blends Luxury, Elegance and Efficiency in the Full-Size Segment

2012_toyota_avalon_photo
The Toyota Avalon, redesigned and made more efficient for the 2011 model year, moves into 2012 unchanged, still offering a unique combination of full-size room with understated luxury.

Given an elegant, more substantial presence in the 2011 redesign, Avalon evokes a time when travel was sophisticated, elegant and comfortable. Fully in tune with the times, the 2012 Avalon offers a compelling combination of performance and fuel economy. Its standard 268-horsepower V6 engine, teamed to a six-speed automatic transmission, yields both impressive acceleration and merging power with an EPA highway MPG estimate of 29 MPG.

Avalon’s 106.9 cubic feet of passenger space and 14.4-cubic foot trunk put it in the EPA’s “large car” category- (versus Camry, Fusion, and Sonata, Avalon is about nine inches longer). Generous rear seat roominess includes 40.9 inches of legroom.

A distinctive exterior style and a roomy interior rich with premium touch points and practical technologies make the Avalon a standout in its class. The 2012 Avalon is available in two grades, Avalon and Avalon Limited.  Both are well-equipped with leather-trimmed interior, eight-way power driver’s seat, back-up camera, dual zone automatic climate control with air filtration, moonroof and 17-inch alloy wheels.

The Avalon Limited in addition features heated and cooled front seats, an eight-way front passenger’s seat with lumbar support, driver’s seat cushion extension, rain-sensing windshield wipers and Smart Key.  Additional standard features the Limited has over the base grade are: HID, chrome outer door handles (versus color-keyed,) outer mirrors have memory and puddle lamps, memory driver’s
seat and wood-grained steering wheel/shift knob/rear armrest box lid. The Avalon grade can be upgraded with a JBL Synthesis sound system and heated front seats, and Navigation is optional for both grades. Base grade options also include memory package (outer mirrors and driver’s seat.) Base grade customers can get heated seats alone, or with memory package.

Restyled primarily at Calty Design Research in Newport Beach, Calif., and Ann Arbor, Mich., the Avalon is assembled at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky (TMMK), a “zero landfill” facility that also assembles the Camry, Camry Hybrid and Venza.  This model was developed at the Toyota Technical Center (TTC) in Ann Arbor.

An available touch-screen navigation system with real-time traffic (requires subscription), and Bluetooth® hands-free phone capability with music streaming to the audio system are among Avalon’s easy-to-use technologies.

The Avalon is powered by a 24-valve, dual-overhead cam (DOHC) 3.5-liter V6 engine that produces 268 horsepower at 6,200 rpm and 248 lb./-ft. of torque at 4,700 RPM.  The engine is equipped with the dual VVT-i electronic valve-control system that ensures a broad powerband. The six-speed automatic transmission provides an engaging driving experience and helps optimize fuel economy. Uphill/downhill shift logic selects the proper gear for driving conditions and helps provide moderate engine braking during downhill driving.

The 2012 Avalon’s EPA ratings of 20 MPG in the city 29 MPG highway match or even exceed those of midsize six-cylinder models, a testament to Toyota’s technology. The Avalon is certified as an Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV).

The Avalon’s MacPherson strut coil spring independent suspension delivers a sophisticated blend of smooth ride quality and precise driving control.  Rack-and-pinion steering combines with front-wheel-drive and optimized steering gear for an easy, natural handling feel.

Exterior Design
The Avalon projects an elegant, outgoing presence.  A wide, substantial grille ties into projector headlamps. These blend with the broad hood to emphasize the Avalon’s wide stance. The headlamps, which combine multi-reflector halogen high beams with halogen or HID (only available on Limited grade) low beams, use “light pipes” to create a signature night-time appearance.  The front fog lamps, integrated into a trapezoidal front bumper, provide wide illumination. Glare-resistant side view mirrors (Limited grade has both outer mirrors glare resistant, Avalon grade only has driver’s side glare resistant) feature integrated turn signals.

The Limited grade adds 17-inch wheels with a 10-spoke design with mirror finish. Dual exhaust tailpipes are integrated into the cutaway trapezoid shape of the lower bumper.  Reshaped taillights reduce turbulence at the rear, helping also to reduce the car’s coefficient of drag.  The lights integrate stop, turn and side marker lighting functions in one combined lamp.  LED light pipes with dark aluminized sides and both clear and red lenses project a modern appearance.

Interior Design
The 2012 Avalon shows off a contemporary style inside, as well. The generously spacious and elegant interior is fitted with comfortable seating and thoughtfully integrated amenities.  Coordinated colors and rich new wood-grain style materials convey the rich elegance of a luxury sedan. The instrument panel incorporates visually attractive and easily readable Optitron gauges that use graduated white illumination with white pointers.  These are set inside smoked lenses and deep chrome rings that add depth and a sense of luxury. The steering wheel provides fingertip control switches for Bluetooth hands-free phones, the audio system, climate control system and the vehicle information center.

The Avalon’s rear seating area is configured to seat three passengers comfortably, with ample legroom (40.9 inches) and reclining seats that are unique in the segment.  A convenient flip-down center armrest provides storage when the middle seat position is not in use. A power rear sunshade (available only on Limited) activated by a one-touch switch, filters sunlight coming through the rear window.  The sunshade, which helps to protect rear seat passengers from unwanted light and heat, automatically retracts when the driver selects reverse gear.

Beyond the luxury of its spaciousness and obvious amenities, numerous details throughout the Avalon enhance the driving experience and passenger comfort. For example: The dual-zone climate control system has nine airflow modes for more precise control of the interior environment, and a clean-air filter removes dust and pollen. The vehicle doors use three stop positions instead of two for easier entrance and exit; a lockable glove box has a pneumatic-door damper and inner box illumination.

The front-console box features a sliding armrest that moves 4.7 inches front-to-rear to accommodate a wide range of driver positions; the elegantly stitched top is padded with a double density cushion material for softness.  Inside the console box, there is a 12-volt outlet in addition to the USB and auxiliary audio terminals.  The 2012 Avalon features a standard full-size spare tire on an alloy wheel -- a rarity in any segment.

Standard leather-trimmed front seats and seatbacks on the Avalon Limited are fitted with ventilation systems and an enlarged perforation area to help keep them cool.

Technology-Enriched Environment
The 2012 Avalon presents the driver and passengers with a comprehensive array of user technology for enhanced function and connectivity. Standard equipment includes Bluetooth® hands-free phone and music streaming technology to the audio system from a compatible device, SiriusXM® satellite radio capability (with a 90-day trial subscription to SiriusXM Select Package),USB and 1/8-inch auxiliary connections for iPod®, and other audio devices.  Each of the three available audio systems can control iPods seamlessly using switches located on the steering wheel and display track information.

The DVD navigation system features easy search and address input functionality.  The navigation system also offers new displays for road icons and points of interest, as well as a keyboard screen arranged in the same way as a personal computer. The Avalon grade’s standard nine-speaker audio system offers excellent sound quality, while the Limited grade features a standard 12-speaker, 660-watt JBL Premium Synthesis audio system with enhanced two-coil sub-woofer.  The JBL system uses a 12-channel digital amplifier to deliver exceptionally rich, full sound to all seats of the vehicle.

A rear-view monitor function is standard in the rear-view mirror or with the available navigation system.  The rear-view-mirror image includes on-screen back-up guides that help the driver to back into parking spaces or driveways.

Safety
The 2012 Avalon’s occupant-safety strategy includes use of extensively tested energy absorbing structures, protective side impact beams and overhead structure, advanced belt systems and active front headrests as standard equipment.

Seven airbags, including a front knee airbag for the driver, and side curtain airbags for both rows, are also standard on the 2012 Avalon.  Toyota’s standard Star Safety System includes Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), anti-lock braking system (ABS) with Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD), Brake
Assist and TRAC traction control system.  TRAC and VSC functions can be disengaged if the driver needs to free the vehicle if stuck in mud or snow. Each wheel has its own pressure sensor to warn if tire pressure drops to critical levels, providing the driver with a warning.

Color and Trim
The 2012 Avalon is available in nine exterior colors: Zephyr Blue Metallic, Cypress Pearl, Sizzling Crimson Mica, Cocoa Bean Metallic, Blizzard Pearl, Classic Silver Metallic, Magnetic Gray Metallic, Black, and Sandy Beach Metallic.  Avalon grade offers three leather-trimmed interior colors: Ivory, Light Gray, and Black; the Limited grade offers Ivory, Light Gray and Black Bordeaux perforated leather trims with accent-color trim on the vertical surfaces.  Such a wide array of choices is more common in the luxury category.

Limited Warranty
Toyota’s 36-month/36,000 mile basic new-vehicle warranty applies to all components other than normal wear and maintenance items.  Additional 60-month warranties cover the powertrain for 60,000 miles and corrosion with no mileage limitation.  Toyota dealers have complete details on the limited warranty.

Toyota 4Runner Offers New Audio Systems for 2012

2012_toyota_rav4_2
The Toyota 4Runner, the fifth generation of this rugged, full-capability SUV, enters the 2012 model year with major audio and connectivity upgrades and available new automatic running boards. A keystone in the Toyota SUV lineup for 27 years, the 4Runner was named “Most Dependable Midsize Crossover/SUV” by J.D. Power & Associates in 2011.

For 2012, the 4Runner SR5 and Limited grades offer the convenience of newly available automatic running boards. The 4Runner SR5 and Trail models come with standard SiriusXM™ Satellite Radio capability with a 90-day trial subscription included, USB port with iPod® connectivity and hands-free phone capability and music streaming via Bluetooth® wireless technology.

Standard for the Limited grade, and optional for all other 4Runner models, a new display-type audio system incorporates today’s most in-demand connectivity features. Those offered are navigation, Toyota Entune™ services, XM Satellite Radio (with 90-day trial subscription), HD Radio with iTunes® tagging and text/e-mail-to-speech. The Toyota Entune system is a collection of popular mobile applications and data services, with three years of complimentary access. Once the smart phone is connected to the vehicle using Bluetooth wireless technology or a USB cable, Entune’s features are operated using the vehicle’s controls or, for some services, by voice recognition. Entune offers mobile apps for Bing™, iHeartRadio, MovieTickets.com, OpenTable®, and Pandora®. Entune data services include a fuel price guide, sports scores, stocks, traffic and weather.

The 4Runner combines rugged body-on-frame construction with suspension technology that yields ride comfort more often associated with car-based platforms. The 2012 4Runner is available in a variety of configurations and in three models: a well-equipped SR5, top-of-the-line Limited, plus a Trail grade for maximum off-road capability. Optional third-row seats allow for up to seven-person capacity.

Drivetrain configurations include rear wheel 4x2, part-time 4x4 and full-time multi-mode 4x4 with a locking center differential. All models are equipped with a 4.0-liter 270-horsepower V6 teamed to a five-speed ECT-i automatic transmission.

Performance and Efficiency
The 4Runner 4.0-liter V6 generates 270 horsepower and 278 lb.-ft. of torque. Dual independent Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) optimizes torque across the engine’s operating range. Fuel economy ratings rival some car-based SUV-type vehicles at 17 mpg city and 23 mpg highway for 4x2 models (22 mpg highway for 4x4). Maximum towing capacity is 5,000 pounds, with 4Runner’s standard integrated tow hitch receiver and wiring harness.

Handling and Ride
A double-wishbone independent front suspension, combined with a variable-flow rack and pinion steering, help give the 4Runner precise control on demanding roads. Coil springs over gas shocks are used at all four wheels for a comfortable ride and controlled handling. The four-link rear suspension minimizes axle hop and assures a smooth ride for rear seat passengers.

The Limited grade comes standard with an X-REAS suspension system that further improves performance, comfort and control. X-REAS automatically adjusts the damping force of shocks when driving over bumpy surfaces, or when cornering. The system uses a center control absorber to cross-link shocks on opposite corners of the vehicle, substantially reducing pitch and yaw by offsetting opposing inputs. With X-REAS the 4Runner corners flatter, smoother, and handles choppy pavement more easily.

4x4 Capability Designed-In
The 4Runner SR5 and Trail 4x4 models have a two-speed part-time four-wheel-drive system with neutral position. The 4Runner Limited is equipped with a full-time, four-wheel-drive system with a locking center differential and a three-mode, center console-mounted switch. The A-TRAC traction control system is standard equipment on all 4x4 models. The system can distribute driving force to any one wheel in contact with the ground, making terrain irregularities and slippery patches transparent to the driver. An electronic-locking rear differential is standard on the Trail grade.

The Trail grade offers Toyota’s Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) as an option. KDSS significantly improves terrain-following ability by dynamically disconnecting stabilizer bars to allow for more axle travel, and better suspension articulation in slow, difficult terrain.

Toyota’s Crawl Control (CRAWL) feature is standard on the Trail grade. The system helps maintain an appropriate speed to keep the vehicle under control and minimizes the load on drivetrain and suspension components. With the transfer case shifted into low range, CRAWL regulates engine speed and output (along with braking force), to propel the vehicle forward or in reverse at one of the five driver-selectable low-speed settings. This allows the driver to maintain focus while steering over rough level ground or steep grades, without having to also modulate the throttle or brake pedals.

The Trail grade also features a Multi-Terrain Select system that dials in wheel slip control to match the terrain. In loose terrain such as mud and sand, more-than-normal wheel slip is permitted, allowing wheel-spin to work in the vehicle’s favor. On bumpy moguls, or solid rock, wheel slip is minimized and the system acts more like a limited slip differential. The Mogul setting is for any extremely uneven terrain, such as V-ditches, slopes, and ridges, uphill or down.

All 4Runner 4x4 models feature standard Downhill Assist Control (DAC). This feature augments the low-speed ascending ability of low-range by helping to hold the vehicle to a target speed with no driver intervention. All models also come standard with Hill-start Assist Control (HAC), which provides additional control for off-road driving by helping to hold the vehicle stationary before starting on a steep incline or slippery surface.

Exterior Styling
All 4Runner grades feature rugged bumpers and wide fender flares. Aluminum alloy wheels are 17-inches in diameter on SR5 and Trail grades and 20 inches on the Limited, and include a full size spare. The front end’s square fender flares meld with a muscular profile that links with a beefy rear bumper and back door. In addition to its distinctive grille, the SR5 grade also features overfenders to help tackle inclement weather and off-road conditions. A roof rack comes standard.

The Trail grade is designed to maximize off-road performance with superior approach and departure angles, high ground clearance, and an array of functional upgrades for the most demanding active outdoor enthusiast. The Trail model is distinguished by a unique hood scoop, unique 17-inch wheels, black side mirrors, front and rear bumper guards and dark smoke treatment on the head lamps and tail lamps.

The Limited and SR5 grades feature a chrome-plated grille insert, fog lamp bezel and front bumper molding. Front and rear overfenders and side skirts are color-keyed. The side molding, roof rack and rear bumper are also chrome trimmed. The SR5 and Limited grades have supplementary turn signals in the side mirrors, along with puddle lamps.

Safety
The standard Toyota Star Safety System™ includes Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) with traction control (TRAC), an Anti-Lock Brake System with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist. VSC helps the driver to ensure control by compensating for front and rear wheel slip. The system uses selective braking and modulated engine output to help keep the vehicle in line with the driver’s steering inputs. On 4x2 vehicles, the Auto LSD (Limited Slip Differential) system allows for better traction on slippery sections of roadway. The four-wheel ABS with EBD provides the 4Runner with optimal brake proportioning, regardless of vehicle load.

A system of eight standard airbags includes front, side-mounted and knee airbags for the driver and front passenger, and side curtain airbags for the second and third row. All 2012 4Runners have active headrests for driver and passenger, and three-point seat belts for all seats.

The 2012 4Runner Limited offers the new Safety Connect™ telematics system. Available by subscription, with or without the optional navigation system, Safety Connect offers four safety and security features: Automatic Collision Notification, Stolen Vehicle Location, Emergency Assistance Button (SOS), and Roadside Assistance. When Safety Connect is ordered, it includes a one-year trial subscription.

In case of either airbag deployment or severe rear-end collision, an Automatic Collision Notification system is designed to automatically call a response center. If a response agent cannot communicate with the occupants, the agent can contact the nearest emergency-services provider to dispatch assistance. Pushing the in-vehicle “SOS” button allows drivers to reach the response center to request help in an emergency as well as for a wide range of roadside assistance needs. If a 4Runner equipped with Safety Connect is stolen, agents can work with local authorities to help locate and recover the vehicle.

A rear clearance sonar system is standard on SR5 models, and a rear-view monitor system is standard on Limited and Trail grades and optional on the SR5. The system displays in the rear-view mirror or navigation screen (if equipped), helping to keep track of hard-to-see objects to the rear of the vehicle.

Comfort and Convenience
A bright, highly visible instrument panel houses speedometer, tachometer, voltage, fuel and coolant temperature gauges, plus a combination meter that offers multiple functions. An Eco-Driving feedback system allows the driver to monitor fuel consumption in real time. On 4Runner Trail, an overhead console within easy reach organizes the off-road control switches into one location. A compass indicator and outside temperature display add functionality. A manual air conditioning system is standard on SR5 and Trail grades; the Limited features an automatic dual zone climate control system.

For second-row passengers, a sculpted front seat-back shape provides additional knee space. The second-row seats, which include a center armrest, individually recline up to 16 degrees in four steps. Third-row seating features a roomy, supportive seating area. A 40/20/40 second-row seat configuration with a one-touch walk-in function makes access to the third row easier.

A rich leather-trimmed interior comes standard on 4Runner Limited and is optional on SR5. Graphite and Sand Beige fabric is standard on SR5. The Trail models are equipped with graphite color water-resistant fabric seats.

Versatility and Convenience
Fold-flat second-row rear seats provide a level load floor in the 4Runner, and it is not necessary to remove the headrests to fold the seats flat. The available third-row seat is split 50/50 and folds flat, as well. The seats can be folded from the side, or at the rear, using separate one-touch levers. With this new arrangement, more cargo space is available without removing seats, and longer items can be conveniently carried.

A Smart Key system featuring keyless entry with push-button start is standard on the Limited grade. The system allows the driver to unlock or start the vehicle by carrying the keyless remote. The cargo door window has jam control, like the moonroof and power side windows. An available pull-out cargo deck is capable of carrying up to 440 pounds, to make loading heavy items easier and to provide seating for tailgating and campsite relaxation. For models with the sliding deck, a 6.4-liter capacity storage box behind the rear seat provides additional storage.

The Limited grade offers an available JBL® premium system with navigation, featuring a six-disk in-dash CD changer and 15 speakers. The navigation system includes a large seven-inch monitor.

Standard on all audio systems is a unique “party mode” audio setting that is ideal for tailgating, raises bass response and shifts sound balance to the rear of the vehicle. Party mode is in addition bolstered by rear liftgate-mounted speakers, which function with or without party mode selected.

Limited Warranty
Toyota’s 36-month/36,000 mile basic new-vehicle warranty applies to all components other than normal wear and maintenance items. Additional 60-month warranties cover powertrain for 60,000 miles and corrosion with no mileage limitation. Toyota dealers have complete details on the limited warranty. The 4Runner will also come standard with Toyota Care, a complimentary plan covering normal factory-scheduled maintenance and 24-hour roadside assistance for two years or 25,000 miles, whichever comes first.

The available Entune™ system is a collection of popular mobile applications and data services that includes three years of complimentary access to apps and services delivered via most smartphones and some feature phones. (After three years, access charges will apply; excluding Pandora®) Once the phone is connected to the vehicle using Bluetooth® wireless technology or a USB cable, Entune™'s features are operated using the vehicle's controls or, for some services, by voice recognition. Entune™ is scheduled to have mobile apps for Bing™, iHeartRadio, MovieTickets.com, OpenTable®, and Pandora®. Entune™'s data services include fuel guide, sports scores, stocks, traffic and weather. See toyota.com/entune for availability of apps and services

The Toyota RAV4 is offered in three distinct grades – RAV4, Sport and top-of-the-line Limited – and with a choice between the 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine or a powerful V6. Each engine can be teamed with either front-wheel drive or electronic on-demand four-wheel-drive. The roomy RAV4 offers optional third-row seating on RAV4 and Limited grade models.
Performance and Efficiency
The standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine produces 179 horsepower at 6,000 RPM and 172 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,000 RPM. Dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i), controls timing on both the intake and exhaust camshafts. Integrated twin balance shafts reduce noise and vibration.  The Acoustic Control Induction System (ACIS) switches the intake tract length in two stages, based on RPM and throttle angle, to ensure strong torque across the engine speed range.

The four-cylinder engine is partnered with a four-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission. This powertrain returns EPA fuel economy estimates of 22 city/28 MPG highway on FWD models and 21 city/27 MPG highway on 4WD models. An uphill/downhill shift control significantly reduces “hunting” between third and fourth gears during winding uphill driving. Braking on the downhill automatically causes a downshift, which enhances engine braking for better control.  A flex lock-up torque converter continuously controls lock-up switch slippage to enhance fuel economy.

The available 3.5-liter V6 engine generates 269 horsepower at 6,200 RPM and 246 lb.-ft. of peak torque at 4,700 RPM. The V6 is also equipped with dual VVT-i to maximize performance and efficiency while reducing emissions.  The V6 is equipped exclusively with a five-speed automatic transmission. With the V6, a RAV4 can accelerate from zero-to-60 mph in under seven seconds. The V6 models estimated EPA fuel economy MPG ratings of 19 city/27 highway for FWD models and 19 city/26 highway for 4WD models are excellent for this level of performance. All RAV4 models meet Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV II) certification.

  Handling and Ride

A strong, stiff body structure, four-wheel independent suspension and Electronic Power Steering (EPS) give the RAV4 agile, sporty handling and a comfortable car-like ride. The compact EPS unit contributes to fuel economy by eliminating the traditional power steering pump and provides computer-controlled assist only when required. In addition, EPS is interfaced with Enhanced Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) for secure handling control under adverse road conditions.

The RAV4 grade model rides on P215/70 R16 tires with 16-inch steel wheels or available P225/65 R17 tires with styled steel or five-spoke aluminum alloy wheels.  The Sport grade enhances driving performance with its standard 18-inch alloy wheels and a sport-tuned suspension.  The Limited grade rides on P215/65/R17 tires with standard six-spoke aluminum alloy wheels.

The RAV4’s available automatic on-demand four-wheel-drive system uses an electronically controlled coupling to distribute torque between the front and rear wheels, depending on road conditions and driver input.  The system can continuously and seamlessly switch from front-wheel-drive to four-wheel-drive mode, maximizing fuel efficiency. In Auto mode, torque distribution to the rear wheels is decreased during low speed cornering for better maneuverability.

A 4WD manual locking switch maximizes torque distribution to the rear wheels. When vehicle speed reaches 25 mph, the system reverts to Auto mode. Lock mode also disengages when the brakes are applied, optimizing ABS and VSC operation. RAV4 FWD models have a traction control-based automatic limited slip differential (Auto-LSD).

All RAV4 models equipped with the available third-row seat come standard with Hill-start Assist Control (HAC) and Downhill Assist Control (DAC). HAC provides additional control for on-road and off-road driving by helping to keep the vehicle stationary while starting on a steep incline or slippery surface; DAC is designed to enhance low-speed descending ability by helping to hold the vehicle to a target speed with minimal intervention from the driver.

  Safety

The RAV4’s reinforced cabin integrates front and rear crumple zones and energy-absorbing materials on the ceiling and doors. Active headrests on the driver and front passenger seats move up and forward almost instantly in the event of certain rear-end collisions to help reduce the distance between the occupant’s head and the headrest. The front three-point seatbelts integrate pretensioners and belt-force limiters. Second- and third-row seats also provide three-point seatbelts and height-adjustable headrests in all seating positions.

The driver and passenger advanced front airbags are designed to inflate according to collision severity. A front seat passenger sensor occupant classification system is designed to determine if the seat is occupied and the passenger’s weight category and then determines whether the airbag should inflate. In addition, driver and front passenger front-seat-mounted side airbags and first and second-row roll-sensing side curtain airbags are standard.

Like all Toyotas, the RAV4 comes standard with the STAR Safety System™.  On RAV4, that includes Enhanced Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRAC), Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA) and Smart Stop Technology (SST). The enhanced version of VSC interfaces with the Electronic Power Steering (EPS) system to influence steering assist. The integration of EPS allows the enhanced VSC system to better anticipate the onset of vehicle control loss and more effectively respond to driver operation and vehicle behavior.

Comfort and Convenience
Form, fun, function and value are plentiful in the RAV4 with a generous array of standard convenience features, including air-conditioning; a tilt/telescoping steering wheel with audio and hands-free telephone controls; AM/FM CD stereo with MP3/WMA playback capability, hands-free phone capability, phone book access and music streaming via Bluetooth® wireless technology; six speakers; USB port with iPod connectivity; auxiliary audio jack; cruise control; outside temperature gauge; remote keyless entry; engine immobilizer; ten bottle/cup holders; power windows and door locks; power mirrors with folding feature; illuminated entry system, and three 12-volt auxiliary power outlets.

The Upgrade Value Package available on RAV4 grade models adds 17-inch five-spoke alloy wheels; color-keyed door handles; Daytime Running Lights (DRL); roof rack; privacy glass; power tilt/slide moonroof; upgraded fabric interior; and, on two-row models, a cargo area tonneau cover.

The available Appearance Package on selected Sport grade models gives the RAV4 a sleeker look. Its unique rear door design features chrome accents and deletes the spare tire and tire cover. (The package equips the RAV4 with run-flat tires.) Other external cues include color-keyed power heated outside mirrors with turn-signal indicators and folding feature; a stainless steel exhaust tip; unique badging and a clear rear step bumper protector. Inside, the Appearance Package adds chrome interior door handles; chrome parking brake tip; chrome-accented shift lever and vent trim and unique doorsills.

The Limited Grade brings a touch of luxury to the RAV4, adding dual zone automatic climate control with micro dust and pollen air filter; Smart Key system with push button start that allows the driver to open the vehicle by carrying the key fob and grasping the door handle; upgraded seat fabric; interior footwell lighting; leather-trimmed steering wheel with audio controls and hands-free telephone controls; leather-trimmed shift lever with metallic insert, and a cargo area tonneau cover.

Options
An optional tow package for V6 models increases towing capacity to a maximum of 3,500 pounds. Available features on the Sport grade, in addition to those offered on the RAV4 grade, include a power tilt/slide moonroof with sunshade, leather-trimmed seats, heated front seats, and eight-way power driver seat with adjustable lumbar support. All RAV4 models offer a backup monitor system with rear-view camera and monitor integrated into the auto-dimming rear-view mirror.

Exterior Design
Built on a 104.7-inch wheelbase, the roomy RAV4 was engineered with a focus on quiet ride quality. For example, eliminating outer moldings from the windshield and door glass enhances aerodynamics and reduces wind noise. The grille, headlamps and distinct, sharp character lines give RAV4 a rugged yet sporty look. The rear view conveys a more traditional SUV style, with LED tail lamps and an externally mounted spare tire in a color-keyed shell (except Sport Appearance Package).

The RAV4 Sport grade stands apart from the RAV4 grade with P235/55 R18 tires on 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels; color-keyed door handles and overfenders; integrated fog lights; rear privacy glass; smoked headlamp trim; sport-tuned suspension, and dark charcoal fabric seats.

The Limited grade is distinguished from the Sport grade by 17-inch aluminum six-spoke alloy wheels with P225/65 R17 tires and a unique front grille with chrome accents, roof rails, color-keyed power heated outside mirrors with turn-signal indicators and folding feature, and multi-reflector halogen headlamps with auto on/off feature.

Interior Design
A brushed metallic silver finish on the center cluster, door trim and steering wheel spokes gives the RAV4 interior a contemporary style. Three-tiered Optitron gauges provide an upscale look. Useful touches are also evident with the addition of a large vanity mirror with "eye-friendly" ceiling lights, illumination on two extra-large front cup holders and a cell phone holder in the center console.  The Limited grade offers an additional level of refinement with an air conditioning vent dial, chrome accented air conditioning vent garnish and a chrome parking brake tip.

The RAV4 offers numerous seating configurations, spacious cargo area under-floor storage (on models without the third-row seat) and provides a 73-cubic foot cargo area with all rear seats folded down. The 60/40-split second row seat features reclining seatbacks and an armrest with two cup holders.  The seats slide fore and aft to maximize room for passengers or cargo. The second row seats fold flat using convenient tilt-down levers on the side of the seatbacks; two-row models include one-touch fold-flat levers on either side of the cargo area. The optional 50/50 Split-and-Stow® third-row seat on RAV4 and Limited grades accommodates two passengers and folds flat under the rear deck.

Abundant interior storage includes a dual glovebox; front door compartments; a large center console box; front seatback pockets and a rear door storage pocket.  On two-row models, two storage compartments are concealed under the rear cargo area floor by a water-repellant foldable deck board.

The Tundra offers three engine choices, a 270-horsepower 4.0-liter V6, a 310-horsepower 4.6-liter V8 and the 5.7-liter V8 with 381 horsepower. For 2012, all Tundras have standard heavy-duty battery, heavy-duty starter, windshield wiper de-icer, daytime running lights (DRL), front and rear mudguards, and heated, power, outside mirrors. All Tundra grade models feature standard styled steel wheels for 2012. The Tundra DoubleCab and CrewMax models offer an optional Chrome Package that includes chromed exhaust top, side mirrors, door handles and chrome-clad 18-inch steel wheels.

The 2012 Tundra is offered in two grades (Tundra and Limited), three cab styles (Regular, Double Cab and Crew Max), three wheelbase lengths (126.8, 145.7 and 164.6 inches, depending on model and configuration) and three bed lengths (78.7, 97.6 and for CrewMax only, 66.7-inches).

By combining popular equipment, Tundra’s option packages were simplified to make it easier for customers to find the right Tundra with the equipment they desire. Tundra grade Double Cab and CrewMax models now offer four streamlined packages: Convenience Package, Convenience Package with Bucket Seats, Upgrade Package and SR5 Package. Regular Cab offers four redesigned packages: SR5 Package, SR5 Upgrade Package, TRD Off-Road Package, and Color-Keyed Bumper Package.

A Tundra Work Truck Package is aimed at commercial truck buyers or customers who need a tough, no-frills truck with exceptional cargo and towing capacity. The package features heavy-duty vinyl-trimmed seating surfaces, and heavy-duty all-weather flooring; it is available in Regular and Double Cab configurations with any of the Tundra’s three engine choices. At the opposite end of the spectrum, the Platinum Package available for the Tundra CrewMax Limited model offers numerous luxury features, such as heated and ventilated front bucket seats with embroidered headrests, perforated leather-trimmed seating surfaces, power tilt/slide moonroof with sliding sunshade, and wood-grain-style interior trim.

Performance
The 4.0-liter Dual Overhead Cam (DOHC) V6 engine with Dual Independent Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) standard in Tundra Regular and Double Cab models produces 270 horsepower and 278 lb.-ft. peak torque. It is paired with a five-speed automatic transmission with uphill/downhill shift logic.

The available 4.6-liter DOHC i-Force V8 offers 310 horsepower and 327 lb.-ft. of peak torque, and the 5.7-liter DOHC i-Force V8 produces 381 horsepower and 401 lb.-ft. of peak torque. All Tundra engines feature an aluminum cylinder block and DOHC heads, along with Dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) for a broad torque curve and optimized efficiency.

The Acoustic Control Induction System (ACIS) in all the engines uses butterfly valves inside the intake manifold that switch the length of the intake runners in two stages, based on engine RPM and throttle angle, to optimize efficiency across the engine speed range.

Both i-Force V8 engines are teamed with a six-speed automatic transmission. A warming unit quickly brings the transmission fluid up to operating temperature to optimize cold-weather performance. Both V8 engines meet Ultra-Low Emissions Vehicle (ULEV II) emissions certification requirements.

Capability, Handling and Ride
Tundra's advanced TripleTech frame uses wide, full-boxed rails for the front portion, a reinforced C-channel under the cab and an open C-channel underneath the bed to maximize strength, ride quality and durability. The double A-arm front suspension uses coil-over spring shock units, while a front-mounted steering rack helps enhance steering feel and response. The rear suspension uses staggered shocks mounted outboard of the springs to improve the shocks' dampening efficiency. Spring rates are tuned to provide a flat vehicle stance when fully loaded.

The Tundra is equipped with standard 18-inch styled steel wheels with P255/70 R18 tires. Limited grade models get standard 18-inch five-spoke aluminum alloy wheels with wider P275/65 R18 tires and optional 20-inch five-spoke alloy wheels with P275/55 R20 tires. An optional TRD Off-Road Package combines off-road tuned suspension featuring Bilstein gas-charged mono-tube shock absorbers, P275/65 R18 BFGoodrich® off-road tires on 18-inch alloy wheels, plus fog lamps, fuel tank skid plates and TRD Off-Road graphics.

The available TRD Rock Warrior Special Edition package combines a tough off-road look with rugged off-road capability. Available only as a 4x4, the truck includes Bilstein® shock absorbers and 17-inch TRD Rock Warrior forged alloy wheels with LT285/70 R17 BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO tires.

The package is available in Black, Radiant Red, Magnetic Gray Metallic or Super White exterior colors with color-keyed front bumper and grille surround with matte black rear bumper. The Rock Warrior Tundra is also equipped with fog lamps, privacy glass and front bucket seats with eight-way adjustable driver's seat, four-way adjustable front passenger seat and black fabric-trimmed seating surfaces.
New for 2012, the package adds an auto-dimming rearview mirror with integrated backup camera display, compass, and HomeLink® universal transceiver.

The standard four-wheel disc brakes use large ventilated rotors - 13.9 inches and 1.26-inches thick - with four-piston calipers in front; and 13.6 x 0.71-inch with two-piston calipers in the rear. Anti-lock brakes (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA) are standard on all Tundra models. EBD optimizes brake pressure at each wheel for greater control under braking, especially when cornering. BA is designed to determine if the driver is attempting emergency braking. If the driver has not pressed firmly enough on the brake pedal to engage ABS, the system supplements the applied braking power until pedal pressure is released.

The standard Automatic Limited-Slip Differential (Auto LSD) helps provide better acceleration in deep sand or mud and on mixed-friction surfaces. Compared to a conventional mechanical limited slip differential, the Auto-LSD system is much more responsive and has better wear characteristics. The Tundra’s VSC system integrates traction control (TRAC) and enhances traction on or off-road by helping keep the vehicle on its intended course.

Integration of these technologies also provides driver-selectable versatility to tackle just about any road surface or driving condition. In “normal” mode, VSC, TRAC and Auto-LSD all function to help enable traction and control capability. “TRAC Off” and “Auto LSD” modes activate Auto-LSD to help extricate the Tundra from extreme conditions. The “VSC Off” mode turns off all three of these systems.

Tundra 4x4 models use a part-time, electronically controlled four-wheel drive system featuring a six-pinion planetary reduction gear set to provide 4x2, 4x4 Hi and 4x4 Lo ranges. The driver selects the drive mode using a dial on the dash.

Safety
All Tundra models feature the standard Toyota Star Safety System™. The system includes Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRAC), an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), and Smart Stop brake override technology. Smart Stop Technology is designed to automatically reduce engine power when both brake and accelerator pedals are pressed at the same time under certain conditions, helping the driver bring the vehicle to a stop. Tundra features standard front seat-mounted side airbags, and front and rear Roll-sensing Side Curtain Airbags (RSCA) in all models, as well as three-point seatbelts and adjustable headrests for all seating positions. The front seatbelts include pretensioners and force limiters. All models are equipped with driver and front outboard passenger Advanced Airbag System, and driver and front outboard passenger knee airbags.

Comprehensive Towing Package
An available Tow Package on all V8 model helps increase towing capacity up to 10,400 pounds, depending on the model and drivetrain. A one-piece towing receiver is integrated into the frame prior to bed installation. The structure runs nearly two feet down the length of the frame and attaches to each side around the rear spring shackles' cross-member with 12 bolts. Tow Package rear springs help provide level full-load rear suspension height and maintain a full range of suspension travel.

The standalone optional Tow Package also upgrades Tundra’s cooling and electrical systems. An integrated engine oil cooler helps handle the demands of towing under a full load, and a power steering fluid cooler is added, as well.

The seven-pin towing hitch connector sits above the hitch to help avoid damage during high-departure-angle driving.

Electrical upgrades include an under-dash connector pre-wire for a third-party trailer brake controller, both seven- and four-pin trailer brake connectors near the hitch, and an up-rated alternator. On 5.7-liter models, heated, power, outside tow mirrors with turn signal indicators and manual-extend feature are available.

With the Towing Package, the six-speed automatic transmission gains a TOW/HAUL shift mode, selectable by a dedicated switch. The TOW/HAUL mode applies specific logic for adjusting the throttle sensitivity and transmission shift control, favoring and holding lower gears when accelerating or decelerating to help enhance control and safety. Standard for all models, Trailer Sway Control uses the Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) to help counteract handling forces applied to the truck in an effort to minimize the impact of trailer sway.

Exterior Design
Tundra offers three cab styles: two-door Regular Cab, four-door Double Cab, and the super-sized four-door CrewMax with the segment's leading rear-seat legroom. Tundra Regular Cab and Double Cab models are offered in standard bed (78.7-inch) or long bed (97.6-inch) configurations, while the CrewMax comes with a 66.7-inch bed; all beds are 22.2-in. deep. The Tundra's lockable all-steel, easy lower and lift tailgate lowers slowly with no slam and can easily be removed. On Double Cab and CrewMax models, the standard power rear windows retract completely into the doors. Regular and Double Cab models offer an optional horizontal sliding rear window. A power vertical sliding rear window is standard on CrewMax.

A standard cargo lamp illuminates the bed at night, and a Deck Rail System with four adjustable tie-down cleats is standard on Limited grade models and available on all others. Featuring four adjustable tie-down cleats connected to the rails of the all-steel bed, the rail system can be used to secure many types of loads, with a 220-lb. rating per attachment.

Genuine Toyota Accessories available for the Tundra include a number of cargo bed enhancements: tonneau cover, bed mat, bedliner, bed extender, bed step, deck rail accessories, cargo divider, and tie-downs with utility hooks.

Interior Design
Tundra’s U-shaped “command and control” center provides an unobstructed view of the road and gauges, while keeping all controls within easy reach. The large door handles and easy-to-turn control knobs can be operated even while wearing work gloves. The 3.4-liter upper glove box can hold a standard Thermos™ bottle, with additional space available in the 9.5-liter lower glovebox.

The center console in bucket-seat models can hold a laptop computer or hanging file folder storage, which was a pickup truck first. There are two 12-volt DC power outlets, one on the dash and one in the center console. CrewMax models add a third outlet at the rear of the console; outlets remain live for up to two hours after the ignition is switched off.

The Tundra Regular Cab offers generous behind-the-seat storage, and the Double Cab features front-hinged rear doors that open up to 80 degrees. Double Cab models provide a roomy rear seat with a 22-degree backrest angle and 34.7 inches of rear legroom, which is on par with some midsize sedans.

The Tundra CrewMax has limo-like maximum rear legroom of 44.5 inches, plus the segments only reclining and sliding rear seat. A 10-inch slide range allows the owner to tailor both passenger comfort and room for onboard cargo. CrewMax models have additional storage under the rear seat.

A concealed compartment to the right of the shift lever can hold a Thomas® guidebook. The built-in toolbox behind the rear seat in all models provides clean, accessible storage for the jack, handle and lug wrench. In Double Cab models, the rear-seat cushions flip up with an easy one hand operation to provide additional storage area. In CrewMax models, the rear seat backs fold in an easy one-hand operation to provide a flat storage area.

In CrewMax models, the rear seat backs fold in an easy one-hand operation to provide a flat storage area. The front doors have large storage pockets and can also hold two 22-ounce bottles. Rear doors on Double Cab hold one bottle, and CrewMax holds two bottles.
