Toyota announces its presenting sponsorship of Morgan’s Wonderland and the new San Antonio Scorpions

San_antonio_scorpions
Toyota today announced its presenting sponsorship of Morgan’s Wonderland, the world’s first theme park specifically designed with special-needs individuals in mind and built for the enjoyment of everyone, as well as the new San Antonio Scorpions soccer and special-events stadium.
As presenting sponsor of unique and colorful Morgan’s Wonderland in San Antonio, Toyota will provide major financial support for the 25-acre theme park, which is completely wheelchair-accessible. It features more than 25 elements and attractions including rides, playgrounds and gardens, and in its brief history, it already has attracted guests from all 50 states and more than 30 other countries.

Presenting sponsorship of Scorpions stadium will include naming the facility as Toyota Field. As a member of the North American Soccer League (NASL), which is one step removed from Major League Soccer, the Scorpions are the only team in professional sports to be organized for the expressed purpose of supporting a non-profit such as Morgan’s Wonderland that seeks to help those with special needs.

“Toyota is pleased to support Morgan’s Wonderland and the San Antonio Scorpions,” said Jack Hollis, Vice President of Marketing at Toyota Motor Sales, Inc.  “We are honored to be able to support the mission of Morgan’s Wonderland. In less than three short years, the park has made a difference in the lives of thousands of people with special needs and their families. And now the Scorpions bring both the excitement of pro soccer and a revenue stream for the park; this is a win-win situation for everybody. Toyota, our regional distributor Gulf States Toyota, and the San Antonio-area Toyota dealers are proud partners in sponsoring Morgan’s Wonderland and the Scorpions.”

At the announcement, the new “Morgan’s Wonderland presented by Toyota” signage was unveiled by 18-year-old Morgan Hartman, namesake of the park. This signage will be featured throughout the park and in promotional materials. Three Toyota mobility vehicles will also be displayed at Morgan’s Wonderland.
Toyota Field signage on the 8,000-seat stadium under construction on Thousand Oaks Drive near Morgan’s Wonderland was also unveiled during the announcement. Toyota support for the Scorpions will be visible in multiple communications initiatives for the team.  Capable of expansion in stages to 18,000 seats, the new stadium home of the Scorpions will be completed in time for the 2013 NASL soccer season and also will host community events and concerts.

“As the regional player here in Texas for Toyota, Gulf States Toyota and our six San Antonio dealers will take the lead in the Scorpions-Toyota Field portion of the sponsorship,” said J.C. Fassino, Vice President of Community Relations for The Friedkin Group, parent company of Gulf States Toyota. “We are pleased to be able to support the Scorpions, their games and their mission of funding for Morgan’s Wonderland. It is a unique sports partnership.”

San Antonio philanthropist Gordon Hartman and his wife, Maggie, led the effort to create Morgan’s Wonderland so people of all ages with and without disabilities could come together in a safe, colorful, barrier-free park for fun and understanding.

Morgan’s Wonderland opened in spring 2010 along with the South Texas Area Regional (STAR) Soccer Complex, which like the Scorpions, conveys net profits from the operation of 13 first-class, FIFA-sized playing fields to the theme park. Because anyone with a physical or cognitive special need is admitted free to Morgan’s Wonderland, Hartman sought other revenue streams to help the park meet its financial obligations as well as to expand programs and services for the special-needs community. In April 2012, the San Antonio Scorpions FC began play as the newest team in the NASL and started generating net profits for Morgan’s Wonderland.

“We are deeply grateful to Toyota for the support pledged to Morgan’s Wonderland and the Scorpions,” said Hartman, CEO of The Gordon Hartman Family Foundation. “Toyota is a world-class company with a passion for excellence that extends to helping causes that truly make a difference in people’s lives. We’re just beginning to scratch the surface in helping those with special needs, but Toyota’s involvement, commitment and generosity will definitely help accelerate our efforts.”

Scorpions President Michael Hitchcock said Toyota Field will be “a first-class playing facility where exciting professional soccer will ultimately produce victories for individuals with physical and cognitive challenges. We’re proud to have Toyota’s name on the stadium because it will remind us to continually strive for outstanding performance. We look forward to a long and mutually beneficial relationship with Toyota.”

TABC, originally known as Atlas Fabricators, contracted with Toyota in 1972 to produce truck beds for vehicles destined for the U.S. Two years later, Toyota purchased the operations and renamed it TABC, becoming the first manufacturing investment in the U.S. for Toyota.

Today, TABC employs 470 and its investment tops $270 million. It produces stamped and welded parts, steering columns and catalytic converters for a number of Toyota’s vehicle assembly plants in North America and Japan and tests, inspects and repackages end-of-life hybrid vehicle batteries.

“The spirit of family is what makes TABC unique,” said Atsushi Niimi, executive vice president and member of the board of Toyota Motor Corporation. “As our first manufacturing plant in the U.S., TABC’s rich history represents Toyota’s commitment to outstanding teamwork and continuous improvement.”

Toyota Financial Services Announces Expansion of Its 'Making Life Easier' Scholarship Program to $1 Million

Toyota Financial Services (TFS) today announced the expansion of its Making Life Easierscholarship program to $1 million for 2013, which will provide scholarships to underserved students through Boys & Girls Clubs of America as well as other TFS non-profit partners including North High School, All Peoples Community Center, Community’s Child, 1736 Family Crisis Center, and Los Angeles Team Mentoring.

The announcement took place at a Community Day event held on the Toyota Financial Services main campus where more than 350 students and their families, Toyota associates and special guests gathered to celebrate the students’ academic achievement.

Since 2007 Toyota Financial Services has provided scholarships to deserving students from local non-profit partners including students from the East Los Angeles Boys & Girls Clubs who have demonstrated academic achievement and served as role models by volunteering in their community.  As part of TFS’ national giving strategy, the Making Life Easier scholarships program allows economically disadvantaged youth to pursue their higher education goals by providing up to $20,000 for university, college, trade or vocational school tuition and fees. To date, TFS has provided $1.4 million in scholarships to nearly 400 local Boys & Girls Club students and more than $2.3 million in direct funding to the Boys & Girls Clubs of East Los Angeles and $6.4 million to Boys & Girls Clubs of America and other Clubs across the country to support after-school programs and family economic development programs.

Earlier this year, Toyota partnered with Boys & Girls Clubs of America to announce the establishment of Diplomas to Degrees - or D2D, an intensive college readiness program funded by an initial $1.5 million grant from Toyota over three years to help provide tools, resources and support to Boys & Girls Club teens to better prepare them to move from high school to college graduates. This year, nine Boys & Girls Clubs piloting the D2D program participated in the Making Life Easier scholarship program and as a result TFS is awarding $85,000 in scholarships to D2D students from across the country.

“Toyota Financial Services is building on six years of success and expanding our Making Life Easier scholarship program will enable us to reach thousands of kids on a national level,” said George Borst, President and CEO of Toyota Financial Services. “We are committed to helping improve the quality of life in the communities where we live and work, and through our partnerships with Boys & Girls Clubs of America and other non-profits we are able to engage with really inspirational and courageous students and become a part of their lives.”

Among the students honored at the Community Day event, local Boys & Girls Clubs of East LA student Ivonne Gonzalez who received a $20,000 scholarship shared her story how at a young age she overcame life challenges and financial difficulties, while managing to keep good grades and serve as positive role model within her community.  Also recognized was Brian Miller from San Antonio, Texas who was one of the Making Life Easier Scholars through the Diplomas to Degrees Program for 2012.

“We are so proud and thrilled to congratulate the students honored here today,” said Judith J. Pickens, Senior VP of Program & Youth Development Services, Boys & Girls Clubs of America.  “The hard work of these Club members and the support they receive through our programs and our ongoing partnership with Toyota helps to build stronger communities by creating hope and opportunity for underserved young people here and across the country.”

The Community Day event featured special guests from Boys & Girls Clubs of America including former L.A. Laker and retired NBA star, philanthropist, and Boys & Girls Club alum AC Green, who congratulated the students on their achievements.

In addition, TFS associates held their annual “Back to School Drive” where they support deserving local youth by donating backpacks, school supplies, and other necessities to start the school year off right.  Associates “adopt” a student and help set them up for success this school year by purchasing school supplies and then assist stuffing the backpacks. This year’s annual Back to School Drive yielded more than 700 backpacks for underserved students.

Do you drive a lot at night? If so, follow these night time driving tips!

Use your lights courteously: When on the road, turn your headlights on one hour before sunset to make it easier for other drivers to see you in twilight, and keep your headlights on at least one hour after sunrise. In fog, use only your low beam headlights; high beams reduce your own ability to see and may temporarily blind other drivers. If your vehicle is equipped with fog lamps, use them with your low beams only when there is fog or inclement weather.

Avoid glare: Instead of looking at oncoming headlights, look toward the right side of the road and watch the white line marking the outside edge of the traffic lane. When headlights from vehicles following you reflect in your rearview mirror, use the "day-night" feature on the mirror (if equipped) or adjust your mirror to cut out as much of the light as possible.

Adjust your vehicle's interior lighting: If streetlights cause a lot of glare, dim your dashboard lights and use your sun visor. Avoid using any other light inside your vehicle.

Keep all windows and headlights clean: Dirty windows can increase glare, making it more difficult to see, while dirty headlights can reduce efficiency by as much as 90 percent. Be sure to clean the inside and outside of your windshield as well as your headlights.

Increase your following distance: Increasing your distance by four to five seconds can make it easier to spot potential problems on and along the roadway and give you more time to respond. In addition, proper lighting will enable you to react quicker and stop at a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you.

Use vehicle mirrors to your advantage: Exterior mirrors that are properly aligned not only reduce blind spots, they also reduce glare from vehicles behind you. The outside rearview mirrors should be adjusted so that the bodywork of the vehicle is just outside of the driver's view.

Forty-One Innovative Environmental Projects Win Over $1 Million in Funding from Audubon and Toyota

Toyota and the National Audubon Society today awarded over $1 million in TogetherGreen Innovation Grants funding to 41 innovative environmental projects nationwide. This year’s winning projects involve more than 150 conservation, environmental justice and community organizations working collaboratively on habitat, water and energy conservation. Many of the projects focus on engaging audiences that have traditionally been underrepresented in the conservation movement, from landowners to religious communities to inner-city students.

“Groups that won Innovation Grants this year have ingenuity and creativity on full display. And that’s what it takes to tackle the environmental challenges we face today,” said Audubon President and CEO David Yarnold. “I’m proud to partner with these innovators in creative approaches to achieve healthier communities and big conservation results.”

Sample projects that will receive 2012 funding include:
  • Habitat: In Connecticut, Audubon Connecticut and the Connecticut Student Conservation Association will create Audubon WildLife Guards, a Coastal Stewardship and Youth Conservation Training Program in Bridgeport, Conn. The program will provide green job training, mentoring and employment opportunities for high school students who will work to protect threatened beach nesting birds on Pleasure Beach, the largest intact barrier beach in the state.
  • Water: In Kansas, Friends of the Kaw, Inc., along with the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation, Topeka Audubon Society and Jayhawk Audubon Society will launch the “Save Soldier Creek” campaign to minimize stormwater runoff  in the rural Soldier Creek watershed – reducing pollution and improving water quality and bird habitat).
  • Energy: In Arizona, Nina Mason Pulliam Rio Salado Audubon Center and Arizona Interfaith Power & Light will broaden its Footprints of Faith campaign to African American and Latino churches in Phoenix and Tucson promoting steps congregations can take to reduce their carbon footprints.
  • Engaging diverse audiences in conservation: In North Carolina, Wild South and its partners North Carolina Audubon Society, High Country Audubon Society, National Forests of NC and the Western North Carolina Alliance will reach out to military servicemen and women and nearby Asheville residents to involve them in controlling non-native invasive plants, monitoring bird populations, and educating the public on environmental issues. The goal of the project is to preserve the wilderness character and rare species habitat of the Linville Gorge Wilderness, one of the most rugged and scenic areas in the East.

“Toyota and Audubon really share in the belief that environmental change starts at the grassroots level,” said Patricia Salas Pineda, group vice president of national philanthropy and the Toyota USA Foundation. “We’re so proud to support this year’s Innovation Grants, which embody TogetherGreen’s commitment to conservation, innovation and diversity.”
