Monday Maintenance Tip: Keep an auto log

Keep an auto log

Keep a pad and pencil in the glove compartment and use them to record your gas fill-ups and mileage. If you notice that your gas mileage worsens, mention it to your service man. It may be an early warning sign that something is wrong with your car.

Toyota intends to take safety to the next level

Vehicle-to-vehicle-communication
Toyota City, Japan, Nov. 12, 2012 — Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) today began full-scale operations at its ITS Proving Ground, a new test site — within the grounds of the Higashi-Fuji Technical Center in Susono City, Shizuoka Prefecture — established with the aim of reducing traffic accidents through Intelligent Transport System (ITS) technology.   The new 3.5-hectare ITS Proving Ground simulates an urban environment with faithfully replicated roads and traffic signals. The site is equipped with a road-to-vehicle communications system consisting of a vehicle detection system, a pedestrian detection system, a course monitoring system, traffic signals and control devices.

The communications system runs on the 700 MHz band, which was allocated for ITS by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications in December 2011. The 700 MHz band is easily diffracted and reception over wide areas is possible, making it effective for communications with vehicles at intersections and other locations with poor visibility.

With the start of full-scale operations at the ITS Proving Ground, TMC will accelerate its research and development of environmental systems designed to improve fuel efficiency as well as safe driving support systems that seek to prevent accidents involving pedestrians and other vehicles in urban areas and at intersections.

TMC is also conducting research and development on next-generation vehicle-infrastructure cooperative systems that support safe driving and that have been designed to prevent accidents involving pedestrians and other vehicles at intersections with poor visibility through the continuous exchange of road-to-vehicle, vehicle-to-vehicle and pedestrian-to-vehicle information.

At the special-purpose ITS Proving Ground, TMC will work toward the early practical adoption of evermore reliable systems by repeatedly conducting testing and evaluations that can be difficult to perform on public roads with changing road environments.

TMC considers the elimination of traffic fatalities and injuries the ultimate goal of a society that values mobility, and is therefore conducting research and development on individual onboard safety devices and systems based on its Integrated Safety Management Concept, an approach that gives direction to safety technology and vehicle development. TMC is pressing forward with the development of safer
vehicles and technologies and is intensifying its wide-ranging traffic-safety initiatives by participating in the development of safer traffic environments and promoting traffic safety education.

By Sarah Plummer Register-Herald Reporter

BECKLEY — The McDowell County Commission On Aging was presented with a new Toyota Sienna at L&S Toyota in Beckley Wednesday as a part of Toyota’s 100 Cars for Good, a nationwide initiative to give vehicles to non-profit organizations needing a boost to continue to help their communities.

Jennifer Hill, district manager with Toyota Motor Sales, explained around 5,000 nonprofit organizations submitted applications to Toyota and 500 were chosen to be voted on by the public. A new car was chosen every day for 100 days for one of the nonprofit groups.

Hill said this is Toyota’s first large-scale philanthropic venture and is an extremely successful one, drawing in community participation and serving the needs of organizations that provide service to others.

The McDowell County Commission on Aging received the van and a service agreement from the dealership.

Michelle Montz, transportation coordinator for the commission, explained that the McDowell Commission on Aging provides seniors and disabled residents the services and assistance they need remain in their home and independent.

“This is a big honor and is overwhelming for us,” she said. “Our friends responded to our needed and voted for us to get us here.”

She said the vehicle will be used to transport seniors to medical appointments, shopping and other errands as well as to deliver meals to seniors who are homebound.

“Many of our seniors can’t get out without us and have little to no family support and rely on us,” she explained.

Kyle Busch and ‘Rowdy Edition’ Camry Win the Toyota Racing Dream Build Challenge

All the votes are counted and the fans have spoken: Kyle Busch and his track-inspired black-on-black "Rowdy Edition" Camry have won the Toyota Racing Dream Build Challenge. Busch's efforts earned a check from Toyota for $50,000 that goes to his chosen charity for the competition, the Kyle Busch Foundation. Toyota made the announcement today at the SEMA Show with the help of TV racing commentator and Top Gear USA host, Rutledge Wood, master of ceremonies for the event.

"My wife's going to have a lot of Christmas gifts to get again this year," said Busch. "The kids at the Kyle Busch Foundation are going to love that. We appreciate Toyota's support, everybody that's been a part of this program, all my friends here, all my competitors that we had to go up against and my friends at Detroit Speed for building such as awesome piece. I'm really looking forward to seeing Ed put this out on the road."

"Every one of the Dream Build Challenge teams delivered in a big way," said Toyota Marketing Communications and Motorsports Vice President Ed Laukes. "You couldn't ask for a more diverse, creative and exciting group of vehicles. The drivers and teams should be proud."

The competition began two months ago, when Toyota announced the friendly contest among four of its top racing drivers—each competing for his or her favorite charity. Along with Busch, fellow Toyota NASCAR driver Clint Bowyer and NHRA pilots Alexis DeJoria and Antron Brown each assembled teams to create their own dream build vehicles. The result was four spectacular and completely unique builds that have caught the attention of fans and auto enthusiasts everywhere.

The build process was documented extensively on the Dream Build Facebook page where anyone could follow team progress via photos and video and vote for their favorites, with opportunities to win great prizes along the way. The Grand Prize is a Dream Race Trip to the winner's choice of either a NASCAR or NHRA race event. The winner will be announced at a later date.
