BECKLEY — The McDowell County Commission On Aging was presented with a new Toyota Sienna at L&S Toyota in Beckley Wednesday as a part of Toyota’s 100 Cars for Good, a nationwide initiative to give vehicles to non-profit organizations needing a boost to continue to help their communities.
Jennifer Hill, district manager with Toyota Motor Sales, explained around 5,000 nonprofit organizations submitted applications to Toyota and 500 were chosen to be voted on by the public. A new car was chosen every day for 100 days for one of the nonprofit groups. Hill said this is Toyota’s first large-scale philanthropic venture and is an extremely successful one, drawing in community participation and serving the needs of organizations that provide service to others. The McDowell County Commission on Aging received the van and a service agreement from the dealership. Michelle Montz, transportation coordinator for the commission, explained that the McDowell Commission on Aging provides seniors and disabled residents the services and assistance they need remain in their home and independent. “This is a big honor and is overwhelming for us,” she said. “Our friends responded to our needed and voted for us to get us here.” She said the vehicle will be used to transport seniors to medical appointments, shopping and other errands as well as to deliver meals to seniors who are homebound. “Many of our seniors can’t get out without us and have little to no family support and rely on us,” she explained.
